and supermarkets won’t remove the carpet
color.) Pour it on the stain, place a damp white
cotton rag over it, then press it gently with a
hot steam iron for 15 to 20 seconds. With
patience and plenty of steam, the stain will
transfer to the cloth.
■ Turn on the tap. “It’s amazing what you can
clean with water,” Smallin says. To clean crusty
food from your microwave, fill a cereal bowl
with water and microwave it for five minutes.
The steam will soften crusty food on the inside
of the microwave and make it easier to wipe
away. Likewise, place a wet sponge or rag on
dried-on spills in the refrigerator. Close the
door and take care of another cleaning task for
2 0
minutes (empty the dishwasher, sort the
mail). When you come back to the fridge, you’ll
be able to wipe off the spill.
3. CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER
Decluttered, your house will automatically look
tidier. And it’s easier to clean with less stuff to
work around.
■ Put away countertop space-stealers. Some
kitchen and bath appliances, such as bread-
makers and hair curlers, may not get used often
enough to justify keeping them out. “If you use
it every day, it gets to stay; otherwise put it
away,” Smallin says. Put little-used items on
shelves in the basement, attic, or garage where
they’re out of the way until you need them.
